And Stanford, by the way, finished 4-8. • Georgia: The Bulldogs are another team as hot as anyone at the end of the season. One big problem: The Bulldogs not only didn’t win their conference, they didn’t win their division. And one of their two losses came to a South Carolina team that finished 6-6. • Kansas: The Jayhawks finished with one loss and looked good in beating Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. But like Georgia, the Jayhawks can’t complain too much: They didn’t win their division, either. • Missouri: The Tigers handed Kansas its only loss and ran roughshod over Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. But Mizzou didn’t win its conference and lost to Oklahoma twice. • West Virginia: The Mountaineers sped past Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl to finish 11-2. Alas, WVU lost to a mediocre Pitt team at home in the final week of the regular season. Maybe if that loss had come in early November, it wouldn’t have hurt as much in the rankings. At the same time, WVU shouldn’t lose to Pitt anywhere, much less in Morgantown. All this makes you think that no matter who wins the title game, there will be some Associated Press voters who give their No. 1 votes to someone else. And perhaps that’s fitting after such a wild season.
